Well, I must admit I’ve been skeptical about it even I know the power of carrier and essential oils and have been working with both for years. Still, I had to look at the research before another beauty hack promised miracle results.
I’ve been making my own skin and hair treatments for years and I’ve always seen spectacular results.
There’s no need to spend a lot of money on products other than a few basic ingredients and the rest is done at the comfort of our homes.
Rosemary has been helping people. grow healthier hair since medieval times. Modern research is catching up to what our ancestors already knew, and, yes, it was about time.

Comparing Rosemary Oil with Minoxidil (Science Based)

That’s not some random blog claim, that’s actual research comparing rosemary oil head-to-head with one of the most popular hair loss treatments on the market. You MUST have heard of Minoxidil (I was told to use it years ago by the way).
What really caught my attention in this study is that after 6 months both groups had the same amount of new hair growth. But the group treated with rosemary oil reported less scalp itching, which is a common side effect of minoxidil treatment.
Now, that’s VERY interesting.

Minoxidil was originally used as a blood pressure medication by the way. When applied to the scalp, Minoxidil relaxes the tiny muscles in the vessel walls, making the vessels wider. As you an imagine this allows more blood to reach the follicles, helping support growth and possibly regrow thinning hair.
Rosemary oil actually works in a similar way to Minoxidil as it helps to improve the circulation of blood which can help to enhance the regeneration of hair follicles.
In simpler terms: better blood flow means your hair follicles get MORE nutrients (remember the soil example above), and healthier follicles grow STRONGER hair.
Rosemary oil boosts blood flow → Hair follicles get more oxygen and nutrients like iron, B vitamins, and amino acids → Stronger, healthier hair growth.
Here are some of the key nutrients that reach your hair roots when blood flow improves.

Now, I always have to say this: more research is needed, and what works for one person might not work for another.
But the studies we do have are pretty encouraging!

This isn’t your basic oil blend. Each ingredient will serve a specific purpose:

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Making this Oil Magic
What you’ll need:
The Simple Recipe (Makes about ½ cup):
Follow these steps:
Step 1: Sanitise Everything This isn’t optional! Clean all your tools and workspace with hot soapy water, then spray with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Let everything air dry. This step prevents contamination and ensures your oil stays fresh longer.
Step 2: Mix Your Base Oils Combine the argan oil, jojoba oil, and pumpkin seed oil in your glass bowl. Add the vitamin E oil, which acts as a natural preservative (to delay rancidity of the oils) and also adds extra nourishment. I LOVE vitamin E oil. It’s thick, it’s luscious and it’s wonderful for the skin as well.
Step 3: Add Your Essential Oils Drop in your rosemary essential oil and peppermint essential oil. Stir everything together gently until well combined. The mixture should smell fresh and herbaceous. Wonderful!!
Step 4: Bottle Your Creation Pour your finished oil into a clean dropper or pump bottle. Label it with the date so you can track freshness.
Now, Use Your Rosemary Scalp Oil Like a Pro!
Part your hair into sections and apply a few drops directly to your scalp. Massage gently in circular motions. This feels amazing and boosts absorption while stimulating blood flow which is what we’re after.
Leave the oil on for at least an hour, or overnight for intensive treatment. Then wash and condition as usual.

Storage: Keep Your Oil Fresh and Potent
Over the years I’ve learnt a thing or two when it comes to storage. Check my tips below.
Store your rosemary oil in a cool, dark place. The bathroom cabinet is good, but for example don’t place on a sunny windowsill. Heat and light break down those precious compounds we want to keep active. The fridge is a great option too. That’s where I usually keep all my formulations.
Dark glass bottles will keep your product for longer. I love the cobalt blue dropper bottles (with the dropper top) but the ones with a pump dispenser are also good.
Skin plastic containers as some essential oils can actually break down plastic over time. I learnt this the hard way.
The vitamin E you added will delay oil rancidity. I’d say your product will stay fresh for around 6-12 months. If you keep in the fridge it will definitely last you for a long time. BUT, if it smells off, looks cloudy or changes colour significantly throw it away.
Always label your bottles with the date you made it. Trust me on this one, three months later you won’t remember! It has happened to me EVERY SINGLE TIME. I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS regret not adding the date and/or what the product is!
Troubleshooting: When Things Don’t Go as Planned
Let me share some common issues I’ve seen (and experienced myself):
“My oil feels too greasy!”
- You might be using too much. Start with just a few drops per section
- Try applying to damp (not soaking wet) hair for better absorption
- Consider increasing the jojoba percentage and decreasing the argan oil next time
“I’m getting scalp irritation”
- Patch test first! Always test on a small area of skin before full application
- You might be sensitive to one of the essential oils – try making it without them first
- Some people are sensitive to pumpkin seed oil – substitute with hemp seed oil if needed
“It’s not absorbing well”
- Warm the oil slightly between your palms before applying
- Make sure your scalp is clean but not freshly shampooed (slightly oily scalp actually absorbs better)
- Try sectioning your hair more finely for better distribution
“The smell is too strong”
- Reduce the essential oil percentages by half
- Try substituting peppermint with something gentler like lavender
- Remember: the scent will fade as the oil absorbs
Safety First: Important Notes
Because I care about your safety (and have seen too many DIY disasters):
- Patch Testing is Non-Negotiable: Test a small amount on your inner wrist 24 hours before using. If you see redness, itching, or irritation, don’t use the oil.
- Essential Oil Sensitivity: Peppermint can be quite strong. If you’re sensitive to menthol or have very sensitive skin, start with half the amount or skip it entirely.
- Pregnancy and Nursing: If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare provider before using essential oils topically. SO AVOID COMPLETELY before checking please!!!
- Sun Sensitivity: While this formula doesn’t contain citrus oils, some people find peppermint makes their skin more sensitive. Be extra careful about sun exposure after application.
Application Tips That Actually Work
Timing makes a big difference. This oil can be applied 1 to 2 hours before washing the hair, or used as an overnight treatment (my favourite but not for everyone). It may not rinse out easily, but that’s a sign the blend is rich and effective.
When applying, less is more. Start with 5 to 6 drops for the entire scalp. It’s easier to add more if needed than to deal with using too much.
For best results, massage the oil in using gentle, circular motions with the fingertips (avoid using nails). This helps stimulate blood flow without irritating the scalp. A 2–3 minute massage is ideal.
Take your time and make it a calming part of the routine.
